How does it work on the Raspberry Pi?? How are you controlling it? Remote, or mouse and keyboard?

yeah, I started down that road years ago...then walked away in frustration. Granted i didn't really try too hard.

I tried to get it working and ended up just using Plex instead. Much easier to get working, and much nicer to use.

I have a Steambox that also has XBMC installed. I also have RaspBMC on my Pi.
Haven't had a problem yet with them, but the Pi updates are easy to bork an install, and it's just inconvenient to have to start over constantly. But I work in a computer shop, so I should be used to it.

I use Plex on my Mac to stream stuff to my PS3. My Vizio TV has a Plex app on it that uses more of the actual Plex features. But I can't confirm that, because when I tried to use the Plex app, I got a message that the app was only supported if I paid for a Plex Pass . So I just stream through my PS3.

I have it setup on my HTPC. I've found that it takes a lot of time & effort to get it to integrate well with your media library, but once you have it going, it's fucking incredible.

I've run it on everything from an original XBOX to full towers to micro PCs.

I'm starting with an empty PC. Does this thing manage streaming content or just local directories?

I'm using Plex (same core code) on my HTPC, but in reality it doesn't work all that well. I wish there were an 'easy' way to figure out why it sucks for me. It looks so useful for everyone else.

One thing that you'll find with XBMC is that there are loads of plug-ins to do pretty much whatever you want to do. I'm sure that if XBMC doesn't support streaming files natively, there's a plug-in that will do the trick (my HTPC has a few terabytes of storage, so I never stream stuff).

I'm doing the same, but I have a Samsung TV with Plex app. I find the interface to be really crappy though, some TV shows I record on my DVR (EyeTV) don't get the right show information to Plex, even though I've gone in and deleted the shows and added them back under the right show. I am not a big fan. I wish there was an EyeTV viewing app for the smart TVs...

Use Plex, it's both more user friendly and much more powerful in terms of having multiple clients.

If you're using the app from a Samsung SmartTV that's probably why. Those haven't been updated in a while. You're better off purchasing a Roku or something and using Plex off of that.

XBMC is not an OS. You're thinking of OpenELEC.

Only mobile apps get charged. The PLEX Server and PLEX Clients for Windows, OS X, as well as viewing through the browser are free.
You could also try using the PLEXMBC plugin for XBMC, which tries to replicate the media server-to-client functionality of PLEX, but I have no idea how good or bad it is.

I'll have to try it, maybe that will go better. I'm disappointed there's no Plex app for the Apple TV, because I have a lot of stuff stored in iTunes on my HTPC. And yes I've read about the 'Trailers hack' for making Plex work on an Apple TV, but I'm not quite ready to go there...

It's an Apple restriction for why PLEX isn't available on AppleTV.
I don't know exactly what your setup is, but your problem is either with the outdated app on your TV, or the computer that the PLEX server runs on. Perhaps there isn't enough CPU power for real-time transcoding? Samsung's TVs doesn't support .MKV files for example, so any MKV file you play through PLEX, PLEX has to transcode in real time to a readable format like .MP4.

So far nicely. I'm building out an entire home entertainment network over my time off from work this Christmas.
I'm controlling with a mouse. Though I intend to get one of the logitech wireless keyboard with built in touchpads.
My plan is to have a HTPC in living room, set up my xbox 360 as a media machine in the family room and use the Raspberry Pi in the basement. I want to ditch cable and get an antenna so my HTPC is going to have a tv tuner card to use it as a DVR too. Planning on hard wiring everything as the router is 1000 mbps.

i5, 16 gb ram, Radeon R9 270, 4tb drive for data, 256 GB SSD for the OS.

ahh, sounds like a good plan. I don't have cable, and aside from no live sports, (I only watch the occasional baseball game anyways) It's awesome. If you get Hulu, netflix, and maybe amazon prime, you are all set. I Have a raspberry Pi laying around that I haven't had time to do anything with, and a sister who was asking me about buying a Roku. I figure a RP with XBMC would give her a pretty good idea of what it was like so I was going to let her use it.

If you have it already definitely hook up the RP.
It's not wireless like the Roku though, you need an adapter to run it or you have to hard wire

It's 90% stuff I've ripped off of CDs and DVDs I've collected over the years. The rest is downloaded fansubs of asian Dramas. Oh, and I also have emulators running in there so I can just load up old NES and SNES games with the remote and I don't have to dig them out of the shelves. Mostly stuff I legit own physically/digitally or that's not available through retail in the US region.

These wouldn't happen to be Japanese dramas would they? My wife likes those but they are damn near impossible to find anywhere that streams them.

I have 3 usb wireless adapters in a drawer just begging to be used. I know at least two work with the base raspberry pi OS, so they should work with the XBMC build... probably...

Japanese and Korean dramas (and yup they're my wife's thing). She usually torrents them from the d-addicts tracker I believe. I don't think she's ever tried to find a streaming place. I kind of stay out of it unless she runs into something she doesn't know how to use.

You can download RASPBMC from the Raspberry Pi site. That's what I installed on mine

I tried both XBMC and Plex a few yrs ago and couldn't get either to work.
Instead I run PS3 Media Server on my PC, and use it to play video and music through my TV / home theater. Works great, and didn't take but a few minutes to set up.

Thanks. Sorry for the reddit thing, but since they disable the IM here I don't like to clog up the comment section with personal crap and that is about the only way I know how to do it and still have everyone maintain a level of anonymity.

Oh, no worries, I understand...IMs are sorely missing here. I've just never really had a reason to wade into reddit. I actually think my wife might have an account, but I'm sure it's not hard to figure out either way.
